Hey all,
From now on I’ll update my blog in English, so I can update everyone in once :-) . I’m back in the Netherlands since the 21st of April and quite some things happened since then. The next day I already had an appointment in the hospital here, and this wasn’t particularly hopeful. The doctor was worried and said that the scan didn’t look very good. You can imagine, last week was pretty stressful, not knowing what exactly would happen and how bad it would be. They made another scan (CT-scan) and they tested my blood to see whether it could be malignant or not. Last Thursday I got the results and luckily it looks quite good. The doctor says there is a high chance that the mass I have is benign or possibly borderline (not benign, not malignant), but the chance that it’s malignant is very small. I must say, even though I don’t know anything for sure yet, this is a relief! However, my doctor wants to play safe and therefore she wants the assistance of an oncologist during the surgery. Not because she thinks that it is absolutely needed, but just in case during the surgery it turns out to be malignant, they can deal with it in the best possible way. The problem is that the hospital doesn’t have oncologists specialized in this type of surgery, so he needs to come from another hospital and he only comes once every two weeks. Because coming Wednesday is a public holiday (liberation day) the first possible date for the surgery is the 19th of May.. This is incredibly annoying and frustrating, since it feels like I could have finished my semester in Singapore, although I know it doesn’t work that way (the only reason I can wait so long is because we now know it is likely to be benign and I only know that since Thursday).
I just want you to know that I’m doing okay. It’s great to see my family and friends back, but I miss Singapore and the people there :-). I am definitely not used to the weather here (it’s cold and rainy) and I studying for exams sounds much better to me than waiting for a surgery, but I can’t change that. Ah well, the doctor told me that I’ll need 6 weeks for recovery and by then it’s already time for European Debating Championships, and hopefully the administration of NUS (my university in Singapore) will let me know soon how and when I can make my exams, so I’m sure everything will work out fine in the end :-)
I’ll update you again after the surgery!
